When I went to art school I was really conflicted about the idea of being an artist. Whether it was because I was afraid guys on constructions crews would make fun of me, or because I’d been living in El Salvador and the whole idea of being an artist felt self-indulgent I’m not sure.

Over time I’ve come to a place where I think that “art” is really important. We remember pieces of history by the wars and the art. Art is what’s left; it’s what ends up defining culture.

I’ve just put up a new portfolio.

In an effort to not get carried away, I set a couple constraints before starting:
- 1 day
- 20 images
- 1280x600 each

I wound up cheating on all three, but only slightly. Most of the code was reused from Hessian, which is a style I’m hoping to perfect over time.

Lots of new stuff’s been posted. Much of it from my time with Girlfriend. I’m going to keep the tumblr portfolio around, but as a process log instead of a public face.

These days, I’m shooting almost exclusively with the iPhone. I only bring out the DSLR when I need a telephoto lens, like if I see a bear cub. I’ve always tried to keep photography feeling like a hobby, and the iPhone keeps it that way. I can shoot an image and have it processed in 30 seconds with one hand. I’d rather be out exploring than sifting through gigs of images on a computer screen. (via VSCO Cam x Kevin Russ | vsco.co)
